This paper discusses the explaining ways of character form shaping's intension of Shuo Wen Jie Zi,and evaluates its gains and losses. From the content of explanation ,there are explanation of character form meaning,of character components and of character meaning.From the form of explanation,there are the theme words form,the previous limit form,the back limit form and additional form,etc.Xu Shen's explanation has both advantages and disadvantages.I think it has three main defects:first,he confused the meaning of language and character;sencond,the concrete explanation is not accurate enough;third,the style is imbalance.
