Abstract

Mesophase pitch with high anisotropic content and low softening point was prepared from a purified coal tar pitch.The effects of condensation temperature and soaking time on the yield,anisotropic texture and softening point of derived mesophase pitches were investigated.The long-flow mesophase pitch with the softening point of 312 ℃ and yield of 79.1% was obtained at the condensation temperature of 420 ℃ for 5 h.By heat-treatment at 400 ℃ for 10 h the prepared mesophase pitch containing large domain texture possesses the lower softening point(305 ℃ ) and high yield(81.4% ).The results indicate that low temperature and long soaking time are beneficial to the formation of mesophase pitch with high yield,excellent anisotropic texture and low softening point.
