A Study into the Poems by Wen Zi-sheng

Wen Zisheng,one of the three Bel-esprits in the north,creates unique poems which can fall into two categories:one is about reality,and the other is about scenery.This paper discusses the poetic style of Wen Zisheng from two respects,viz.,Qizhi(gracefulness) and Qingwan(freshness and gentleness).Zhengang(chastity and firmness) and Chunpu(unsophisticatedness) are the representation ofQizhi(gracefulness),and the style of Chunpu(unsophisticatedness)is related to the simple language,the rigorously chosen verbs and the skillful preference to the short style of poems.And Qingxin(freshness) andWanzhuan(gentleness) are the salient representation ofQingwan(freshness and gentleness).The style of Qingxin(freshness) is derived from his being versed in creating scenery,from his employing colors and from his using dual-syllable words.And the expression of Wanzhuan(gentleness) is expounded from two dimensions,namely,contents(using literary quotations,electing images,writing method of Bixing,and reflecting plaintiveness through mirth) and forms(structural levels and verbal signs).
