Abstract

Objective:To study the clinical features, means of diagnosis and treatment, clinical effects and operative complications of different types of sublingual gland cyst. Methods:A retrospective review was performed on 40 cases of different types of sublingual gland cyst which were were composed of 30 oral ranula,4 plunging ranula and 6 mixed ranula admitted in department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Results:A total of 40 cases, the oral and mixed ranula could be easily diagnosed because of typical characteristics. The examination of centesis and color ultrasound in submandibular region were the important auxiliary diagnosis methods to the plunging ranula. The therapeutic approach was the complete excision of sublingual gland and ranula. One patient suffered a serious post-operation wound hemorrhage that was stopped with emergency operation. No operative complication occurred in all other cases. Conclusion :Ultrasound and centesis examinations are the recommended diagnostic tools for the differential diagnosis. The complete sublingual gland excision should be the preferred treatment of different types of sublingual gland cyst and a key factor to prevent postoperative recurrence.
