Abstract
The formation and distribution of bromine compounds during ozonation in filtered surface water containing bromide were investigated in bench-scale test. The effects of initial concentration of bromide ion, ozone dosage,pH and ammonia content on formation of bromate and other bromide compounds were studied. The effect of bromine ion distribution during ozonation on formation of brominated disinfection byproducts such as brominated trihalomethane formation potential( THMFP-Br) and brominated haloacetic acid formation potential( HAAFP-Br) was analyzed. The results showed that the initial concentration of bromide ion had a larger effect than ozone dosage on the formation of brominated disinfection byproducts. Lowering pH could help to control the formation of BrO-3and trihalomethane formation potential, but increase the generation amount of organic bromide during ozonation. The amounts of THMFP and HAAFP decreased as the ammonia content increased.
