Abstract
This paper analyses the pollutant of the effluent from the tannery, and discusses the source of the pollutant and their harmfulness for environment, special for surface water or rivers and aquatic life. The effluent from tannery has a character of larger amount, higher pollutional charge and complicated pollutants. It don't has continuity either discharge or pollutants. There are mainly trivalent chrome and sulphide which are toxic. Many components in effluent maybe broken down by bacterial action, but oxygen demand is higher. Nitrogen in the effluent means mostly ammonia from deliming and softing, and the nitrogen content of proteinaceous materials resulting from liming/unhairing.
