Abstract

Objective To determine the value of anatomizing the recurrent laryngeal nerve(RLN) in thyroid surgery to prevent injury. Methods The clinical data of 783 cases treated from January 2007 to July 2010 were analyzed retrospectively.Among these cases,405 underwent anatomy of the RLN,378 did not.Injuries of the RLN were observed. Results There were 2 cases of temporary nerve injuries in the RLN anatomy group(0.49%)but no permanent nerve injury case was found. There were 5 cases of temporary nerve injuries and 6 cases of permanent nerve injuries in the non-RLN anatomy group(2.91%).The difference between the two groups was statistically significant(P0.01).Conclusions The anatomy of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroid surgery is effective in reducing and preventing RLN injury
