Abstract
An experiment with the augmented NCⅡdesign was conducted to investigate heterosis, combining ability and genetic model of six ear-kernel characters of maize. The results showed that ear grain weight was the highest and ear row number was the lowest in average heterosis. All characters were controlled by additive gene. Ear row number, grain number per row and ear grain weight should be selected in early generation. Ear length, ear width and 100-grain weight should be selected in later generation. The inheritance of the six ear-kernel characters of maize was not in accordance with additive-dominance model. Ear length had significant additive effect. Ear row number and ear grain weigh had dominant and epistatic effect. Ear length, ear row number and 100-grain weight had significant dominant effect.
