Cyclocryotherapy and trabeculectomy for late neovascular glaucoma

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of cyclocryotherapy and trabeculectomy in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma.Methods Twenty-two cases(22 eyes) of neovascular glaucoma caused by different diseases were treated with cyclocryotherapy and trabeculectomy in order that their intraocular pressures (IOP) were reduced and symptoms were relieved. After operation, 22 cases were followed up period of 3~36 months averaging 18 months.Results Postoperative visual acuity remained unchanged. The IOP in 6.46~20.55 mmHg (1kPa=7.5mmHg)was in 12 eyes (54.5%),in 20.55~28.01 mmHg was in 5 eyes(22.7%) and the IOP over 28.01 mmHg was in 4 eyes (18.2%), below 6.46 mmHg was in 1 eye.The stimulative symptoms were reduced or relieved in 19 eyes (86.3%)and the neovascular net on iris was reduced, most of them disappeared after 6 months. No efficacy was obtained in 3 eyes. These 3 eyeballs were extraction after operation 2 to 6 months. Conclusion Cyclocryotherapy and trabeculectomy can control the IOP, relieve the symptoms and reduce the chance of eyeball extraction in the patients with neovascular glaucoma.
