Department of the Chinese Language,East China Normal University,Shanghai,200241 Abstract: In Lu Xun's novels, the character I is both a function and a connotation.Acting as a function character,it takes on the narrative function, leading the reader into the life space of the dramatis personae. At the same time, the scene of human and things is absorbed into the feeling of the character I,governing the reader's emotional response. When acting as a connotation character,it compares with the dramatis personae and sustains each other. In the end each of them acquires his life. Moreover,as a connotation character, I becomes an unreliable narrator and creates a crack in the narration to develop a deeper meaning space.
