Treatment for Retinal Detachment in Silicone Oil-filled Eyes by Scleral Buckling and Retinal Laser Coagulation

Objective To explore the effect of scleral buckling combined with retinal photocoagulation on recurrent retinal detachment in silicone oil-filled eyes. Methods The clinical results of recurrent retinal detachment of silicone oil-filled eyes in 36 patients treated with methods mentioned above from January 2009 to January 2012 were studied retrospectively. Results The operation in 36 patients was completed successfully, and the complications of retinal incarceration, intraocular hemorrhage and marked intraocular pressure(IOP) elevation did not happened during the operation. Retinal reattachment was found in 21 eyes within 1 week(58.33%), and 7 eyes within 1 month(19.44%),and total retinal reattachment was 28 eyes(77.77%). Retinal detachment was found in 8 eyes within 1 month(22.23%),and which was successfully treated with vitrectomy. Silicone oil was removed after 6 months, and retinal detachment or its aggravation was not found in any one after six months follow-up. High IOP in 10 eyes after operation was controlled accordingly. Conclusion Scleral buckling combined with retinal photocoagulation is simple and its success rate is high in treating recurrent retinal detachment of silicone oil-filled eyes, and it should be regarded as preferred surgical approach,while vitrectomy should be chosen to treat failed cases and complicated ones.
