Abstract

Objective To evaluate the vilsual quality of eyes implanted with aspherical blue-light-filtering intraocular lenses (IOLs). Design Prospective clinical trial. Participants Fifty-seven eyes of 57 patients with age-related cataracts. Methods Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups according to random number table. Phacoemulsification and IOL implantation were applied to patients with aspherical IOLs (HOYA PY-60AD) in 29 eyes and spherical IOLs (HOYA AF-1) in 28 eyes,respectively. All patients were followed up for 3 months. General examinations including visual acuity,intraocular pressure,anterior segment and fundus photography in the first two visits. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA),best corrected visual acuity (BCVA),contrast vision (ETDRS low contrast visual acuity chart),contrast sensitivity (OPTEC6500 Visual founction analyzer) and questionnaire (Catquest-9SF score) were applied at the 3rd month post-operation. Main Outcome Measures UCVA,BCVA,low contrast visual acuity,contrast sensitivity and questionnaire. Results 5% contrast vision under photopic(aspherical/spherical:0.35±0.13/0.43±0.15)and mesopic conditon(0.49±0.13/ 0.61±0.12)and 25% contrast vision under mesopic conditon(0.25±0.12/0.32±0.14)was significantly better in eyes with aspherical IOLs than in thoses with spherical IOLs(P0.05). Higher contrast sensitivity values under mesopic and mesopic with glare conditions (1.5 c/d,3 c/d,6 c/d,12 c/d) were also found in aspherical IOLs group (P0.05 in each condition). UCVA,BCVA and questionnaire results were similar between groups. Conclusion The aspherical IOLs provided better low contrast vision and contrast sensitivity under mesopic conditions,thus improved the optical quality.
