Abstract

Objective To study efficacy of Chinese drugs in treatment of xerostomia after radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods Sixty-five nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients were given a questionnaire to investigate xerostomia following conventional radiation therapy. They were divided into control group(32 cases) and study group(33 cases). The patients suffered from xerostomia in study group were treated with Chinese grugs based on overall analysis of symptoms and signs and the clinical efficacy was observed. Results Xerostomia was found in all 65 patients.Mild, moderate and severe xerostomia occurred in 15(45.5%),16(48.5%)and 2(6.0%)cases of the study group, while in 8(25.0%),19(59.4%)and 5(15.6%)cases of the control group, with significant difference between the two groups(P0.05).Conclusion Xerostomia has significant impact on the patient′s life quality.Chinese drug can ameliorate xerostomia obviously by promoting salivary secretion.
