Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship between serum uric acid and hypertension and pre-hypertension among community residents. Methods A total of 3 416 community residents aged ≥20 years who lived in Dagang oil field of Tianjin city were researched. Some factors such as cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, family history of hypertension were investigated, blood pressure, body weight and waist circumference(WC) were measured, and blood glucose, lipid, uric acid were tested. The associations between uric acid and hypertension and pre-hypertension were analyzed by using univariate and multivariate analysis. Results The mean level of serum uric acid was 331(273-389),288(237-351),240(202-293) μmol/L in hypertensives,pre-hypertensives and normotensives, respectively, with a significant difference among the three groups(P=0.000).The mean level of systolic/diastolic blood pressure was(120.8±15.7)/(78.0±11.0),(123.6±14.6)/(79.8±10.3),(125.1±14.6)/(80.5±10.3),(129.4±15.8)/(83.6±11.1) mmHg for those with uric acid level in the first, second, third and fourth quartile, respectively. The risks of hypertension and pre-hypertension increased with increasing uric acid levels.Furthermore, there were dose-response relationships between uric acid and risks of hypertension and pre-hypertension.Adjusted odds ratio(95%CI) of hypertension and pre-hypertension in the highest quartile of uric acid were 3.393(2.192-5.252),1.974(1.419-2.748),respectively,with the lowest quartile as a reference. Conclusion Hyperuricemia is independently associated with both hypertension and pre-hypertension among community residents.
