Growth and the content of EPA and DHA in three algae under two culture methods

Abstract

3011 strains from three algae species Phaeodactylum tricornutum,Platymonas subcordiformis and Isochrysis galbana were cultured under autotrophic and amphitrophic conditions and their growth and contents of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA),and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were determined. The results showed that Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Isochrysis galbana grew rapidly and had high levels of EPA and DHA. On the constrary, the growth of Platymonas subcordiformis in the heterotrophic culture was comparatively lower with the composition of EPA and DHA decreasing. According to the results, it might come to the conclusions that the amounts of EPA and DHA were very high in Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Isochrysis galbana and profitable for marine culture.
