Analysis of Anxiety and Depression in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Abstract

Objective To explore the correlation between irritable bowel syndrome( IBS) with anxiety and depression. Methods A total of 3242 patients with IBS during January 2010 and January 2013 who had visited doctors in gastroenterology department,were selected as IBS group,and 1520 healthy controls taking medical examinations were collected as control group. Scores of anxiety and depression in the two groups were detected with Self-Rating anxiety scale( SAS) and Self-Rating depression scale( SDS),and the scores and levels of anxiety and depression between the two groups were also compared. Results Compared with those in control group,the scores of SAS and SDS,and the incidence rates of anxiety and depression were significantly higher in the IBS group( P 0. 05,P 0. 01). Conclusion IBS is closely correlated with anxiety and depression,so clinicians should pay more attention to the anxiety and depression of patients with IBS.
