STRABISMUS SURGERY IN CHILDREN:AN ANALYSIS OF 1 164 CASES

Abstract

Objective To investigate the patterns of surgery for strabismus in children for the past few years,and their age distribution. Methods A retrospective study was done in 1 164 children(≤13 years old) with strabismus who underwent a squint correction,under general anesthesia,in our hospital form January 2004 to December 2010.The types of strabismus and the constituent ratio of the age at surgery were analyzed. Results Of the 1 164 children reviewed,the ratio of concomitant esotropia,concomitant exotropia,paralytic strabismus,and specific type accounted for 20.7%,50.6%,26.4% and 2.3%,respectively.The age distribution at surgery for concomitant esotropia was mostly in 1-6-year-old children(61.8%),for those for concomitant exotropia,the age at the time of surgery was obviously older,being seven years old and over,which accounted for 58.1%. Conclusion In this analysis,the ratio of exotropia was higher than esotropia in children underwent surgery for strabismus.More children were seven years old or older at the time of surgery for correction of exotropia,and those for esotropia correction were mostly seen at six years old or younger.
