Abstract

Objective To explore the features and severity of cognitive dysfunction in primary epileptic patients with different seizure types. Methods The subjects were grouped by seizure types:Complex partial seizures group(group 1),Partial seizures evolving to secondarily generalized seizures group(group 2),and Generalized seizures group(group3).The Full Intelligence Quotient(FIQ),Verbal Intelligence Quotient(VIQ),Performance Intelligence Quotient(PIQ) and sub-test scores were calculated by means of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adult-Chinese Revised(WAIS-RC).Results The FIQ in group 2 was significantly lower than that in group 3(P0.05).The VIQ in group 2 was significantly lower than that in group 1 and 3(P0.05).The PIQ showed no difference among the three groups(P0.05).The C intelligent factor in Group 2 was significantly lower than that in Group 1 and 3(P0.05).The A and B intelligent factors showed no difference among the 3 groups. The Intelligence degradation index showed no difference among the three groups(df=3,F=2.516,P=0.063).Conclusion Cognitive dysfunction in epileptic patients with different seizure types varys in severity.Partial seizures evolving to secondarily generalized seizures have significantly more impact on the Verbal Intelligence Quotient than on the other two groups, with the attention / memory(factor C) seriously damaged especially.
