Abstract

A novel green process for producing an aromatic polycarbonate based on bisphenol-A without using phosgene and methylene chloride was discussed in detail in this review. The new process employing carbon dioxide as a starting material successively produces ethylene carbonate(EC),dimethyl carbonate(DMC),diphenyl carbonate(DPC),and high-purity polycarbonate in excellent yields and more than 98.0% selectivity. This new technology not only overcomes the environmental and economic problems existing in the phosgene process, but also achieves resource conservation, and energy conservation. Moreover, the new process contributes to the earth environment by the reduction of CO_(2) emissions.
