Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep quality and gender in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).Methods Totally 87 OSAHS patient diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG) were divided according their genders. The general conditions,PSG variables, and sleep quality between the male and female groups were compared and the correlation analysis was conducted. Results In neck circumference, waist circumference, age, snoring index, oxygen reduction index, apnea hypopnea index (AHI),nadir nocturnal oxygen saturation,Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS),and sleep latency there were significant difference between male and female groups (P0.05).In the male group the total Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score had a positive correlation with ESS,subjective sleep quality had a positive correlation with ESS,reduced oxygen index, and AHI (P0.05); and a negative correlation with nadir nocturnal oxygen saturation negative correlation (P0.05); sleep latency had a negative correlation with oxygen reduction index (P0.05); sleep continuing had a negative correlation with AHI (P0.05),sleep disorder had a positive correlation with ESS (P0.05); daytime dysfunction had a positive correlation with ESS,reduced oxygen index, and AHI; ESS had a positive correlation with AHI and oxygen reduction index (P0.05) but had a negative correlation with nadir nocturnal oxygen saturation (P0.05).In the female group sleep latency had a negative correlation with oxygen reduced index (P0.05),ESS had negative with oxygen reduced index (P0.01).Conclusion The condition and daytime sleepiness of patients with OSAHS are more serious in male than in female, the average age of female is older than that of male, the daytime sleepiness degree is closely related to AHI and nocturnal hypoxia.
