The effect of the iodine supplement on the iodine status of the lactating women and their babies

Objective To investigate the effect of iodine supplement on the iodine status of the lactating women and their babies in Beijing Methods From November,2003 to May,2004, the iodine levels of milk and urine from lactating women and their babies before and after iodine administration were measured and compared Results The median values of urine iodine from the lactating women before and after iodine administration were 128 μg/L, 206 μg/L respectively,different significantly( P 0 01), the ones of milk were 210 μg/L,256 μg/L respectively, different significantly( P 0 05), The median value of urine iodine from the breast feeding infants became higher after their mother's iodine intake,different significantly( P 0 05) Conclusion The oridinary diets were not sufficient to the need of iodine for the lactating women, supplement of iodine could improve their iodine status and the ones of their babies too
