Value and Limitation: An Analysis on Deep Ecology of Arne Naess

Ecological Civilization is a long-term task of vital importance to the people's wellbeing and China's future. So, how the Ecological Civiliza-tion should be constructed? Whether we human should give up our liberation and development in exchange for equal coexistence with all natural things which some ecologists have advocated? This paper analyzed and evaluated Deep Ecology which is the most revolutionary and instructive in Western Environmental ideological trends, pointed Naess Deep Ecology generated in the reflection of anthropocentrism,which implemented the deep change of values and provided a new philosophical paradigm in dealing with the relation between human and nature, Naess Deep Ecology had its posi-tive and valuable side;But, Naess Deep Ecology had great limitations. The self-actualization theory of Naess Deep Ecology was some sort of mysti-cism and religious eventually resulted in ecological ethics of Utopia. Naess Deep Ecology discussed the relationship between human and na-ture from a purely naturalism position,which denied the existence of people's subjectivity fundamentally,eventually resulted in the lack of human subjectivity. So we should uphold an objective attitude of seeking truth from facts, and take the dialectical approach of absorb-discard. Then we should understand more scientifically and coordinate more reasonable the relationship between man and nature, not overdo, toward the other extreme.The construction of ecological civilization is the pursuit neither anthropocentrism nor nature-centered doctrine, but is to realize the harmonious coexistence and interaction between human and nature.
