Abstract

Obsjective:To investigate the correlation between intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery and left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertension patients. Method:IMT of carotid artery and left ventricular mass index(LVMI) were measured by ultrasonography in 93 patients with essential hypertension and 32 normotensive controls. Result:IMT of carotid artery increased in hypertensive subjects in grade 2 and grade 3 when compared to the normotensive subjects and hypertensive subjects in grade1. Among hypertensive patients , there were 41 cases with left ventricular hypertrophy and IMT of them increased when compared to other 53 cases. There was positive relation between IMT of carotid artery and LVMI (γ= 0.601,P 0.01).Conclusion:Intima-media thickness of carotid artery can increase in hypertensive patients and IMT is related to left ventricular hypertrophy.
