Abstract

Objective To study the effect of percutaneous autogenous bone marrow grafting in the management of nonunion of tibia fractures. Methods Seventeen patients in the treatment group were treated for nonunion of tibia fractures. The operation was performed under local anesthesia.A marrow needle was inserted into the site of nonunion under the X-ray,and a total of 20~40ml of bone marrow was aspirated from the anterior or posterior iliac crest and was injected immediately into the site of nonunion. The limb was then immobilized. The procedure was repeated at 3 weeks for 2~3 times.13 patients were served as the control group. Results Sixteen cases of seventeen tibia fractures had union in 5~10 months. The rate of bony union was 96.1%,with an average healing time of 7.5 months. Conclusion Percutaneous autogenous bone marrow grafting can play a role in osteogenesis at the site of nonunion. This method is valuable for the treatment of nonunion of tibia fractures.
