Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of exposure of the recurrent laryngeal nerve(RLN) in thyroid surgery. Methods Eight hundred twenty-seven cases' clinical data with thyroid diseases undergoing thyroid surgery from April 2007 to October 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups:exposed recurrent laryngeal nerve group and unexposed recurrent laryngeal nerve group. Results RLN were exposed in 475 cases(exposed group) and were unexposed in 352 cases(unexposed group). In the exposed group,4 cases of RLN was injured, the rate of RLN's lesion was 0.84%.In the unexposed group,17 cases of RLN was injured, the rate of RLN's lesion was 4.83%.There were significant differences between two groups,P0.05.Conclusion Exposure of RLN in thyroid surgery is safety and effective way to protect the RLN.
