Abstract
Based on the presentation of the mechanical and biological properties of biomaterials poly(lactic acid)(PLA),the necessity and common methods of improving PLA properties are briefly introduced in this paper.Co- polymerization is the most effective approach to property improvement. The copolymerization of PLA with poly(glycol- ic acid),poly(e-caprolactone),poly(ethylene glycol)and poly(amino acid)as well as the properties and applications of the copolymers are summarized. The properties of mechanism, hydrophile or functionality of PLA copolymers may be improved compared with PLA,and the biodegradable property can be adjusted.Hence, the biomaterials can be applied to the biomedical and environmental areas perfectly.
