Abstract
The instrumented indentation hardness of silicon nitride and zirconium oxide was tested by developed tester, while the Vickers hardness of the two different ceramic was obtained from calculating by measuring indentation diagonal length. It shows that the values of the instrumented indentation hardness of silicon nitride and zirconium oxide are greater than that of the Vickers hardness. The values of the ratios of instrumented indentation hardness to Vickers hardness of the two different ceramic are 1.225 and 1.130 respectively, which agree with 1.195 times in principles.Accordingly, the Vickers hardness of ceramic can be obtained by instrumented indentation tests, avoiding the difficulties in measuring the indentation diagonal which lack of clarity in the cases of small load indentation hardness tests.
