Abstract
Objective To investigate the treatment of facial paralysis resulted from temporal bone fractures.Methods Surgical treatment was carried out in 60 cases of facial paralysis resulted from temporal bone fractures,of which 48 were treated with transmiddle cranial fossa approach,eight with transmastoid approach and four with trans-mastoid and middle cranial fossa approach.Results During operation,injuries to the labyrinthine segment of facial nerve and geniculate ganglion were found in 48 cases,tympanic segment injuries in eight,injuries to geniculate ganglion and tympanic segment in four.House-Brackmann(H-B) system was used to evaluate the recovery of facial nerve function.A follow up for one year showed that 39 cases reached Grade Ⅰ of H-B,18 Grade Ⅱ,two Grade Ⅲ and one Grade Ⅳ.Conclusion As for cases with facial paralysis resulted from temporal bone fractures,the extent and position of facial nerve trauma should be confirmed so as to perform as soon as possible surgery that is based on position of facial nerve trauma determined preoperatively.
