Abstract

The modal adverbs of the conjuncture interrogative sentence in Deng Hui Yuan are made up of two aspects. One aspect is that some of them are inherited from the ancient Chinese wunai(无乃),dewu(得无),defei(得非) and other old elements, which reflect the trend that such words are in their wane. The other aspect is that most of them belong to the emerging modern Chinese word system of mo(莫),such as mo(莫),mofei(莫非),mobu(莫不),mowu(莫无),mobushi(莫不是) and so on,which gradually replace the old elements and become the main sign of the conjuncture interrogative sentence in Wu Deng Hui Yuan, for the words are used quite frequently in the scripture.
