Abstract

Through analyzing the relevant statements from experts about Chinese modern poetry, after clarifying some basic concepts of Chinese modern poetry such as poetic line containing odd or even number of feet and mid-pause,beat as the basic rhythmic unit and its types,Chinese foot and line building with it,based on the practice of Chinese modern poetry writing, this article proposes that with beat(or foot) as the basic rhythmic unit we can distinguish four basic types of rhythm of Chinese modern metrical poetry:the slowly-pacing and loudly-singing rhythm, the slowly-pacing and softly-speaking rhythm, the fast-flowing and loudly-singing rhythm, the fast-flowing and softly-speaking rhythm, while metrical irregularity causes still more changes in the poetic rhythm.
