Protection of Minority Culture in Contemporary Context——A Case Study of Shui Minority

Abstract

Shui minority people live mainly in remote Qiannan mountain areas,Guizhou province.Shui Writings,Shui Songs and Horsetail Embroidery have long been considered the representative traditional culture elements,which distinguish Shui minority from other ethnic groups.In history,Shui Writings,Shui Songs and Horsetail Embroidery prevailed throughout all the villages of Shui minority.However,in recent twenty years,along with the great changes taking place in both internal and external environments of Shui society,the Shui traditional culture had been faced with unprecedented challenges.How to protect and inherit the three traditional cultural elements challenged the local people and government.This paper first,by the way of a case study,describes and analyzes the protection practices done by Qiannan local government and people and the corresponding preliminary consequences,and then carries out in-depth discussion with an attempt to summarize some rules so as to provide some references in the protection of minority culture in contemporary new context.
