Abstract
Scholars generally hold that Dai Zhen was an idealist and follower of Neo-Confucianism in his early period because of the impact of the new regional Cheng-Zhu ethics.Based on the investigation of Dai Zhen's early writings,however,this paper finds that his attitude towards Cheng-Zhu ethics remained unchanged throughout his life.So the author of this paper believes that,in his early period,Dai Zhen also held simple materialism.
