Abstract
Objective To acknowledge the constitution of TOAST etiology genotyping of ischemic stroke patients and analyze risk factors and recurrence of each subtype. Methods The data was researched by forward-looking and column method and collected from the first-ever ischemic stroke patients in department of neurology, the First affiliated hospital of Dalian Medical University from October 1st 2010 to September 30th 2011. All patients were classified according to TOAST criteria and followed up for a year since the first event. The recurrence of ischemic strokes and the death owing to the recurrence were recorded. The constituent ratio of TOAST sub types, risk factors and recurrence of each TOAST subtype had been analyzed. Results 421 patients were recorded in this research, of which, 58 cases were recorded with the recurrence of ischemic stroke and death. The recurrent rate was 13.8%. The proportion of ischemic stroke subtypes according to TOAST criteria was as followed: stroke of undetermined etiology 42.3%, stroke of other determined etiology 0.2%. The recurrence rates of TOAST subtypes were as followed: cardioembolism 33.3%, stroke of undetermined etiology 14.6%. Recurrence of other determined etiology stroke had not occurred. There were significant differences among each sub types in these risk factors: sex, age, TC, LDL, FIB, GLU, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, cardiac disease, atrial fibrillation (P 0.05). Conclusion TOAST grnotyping as an etiology criteria, is useful for secondary prevention of ischemic stroke.
