Prosthesis for endodontically treated posterior teeth in the elderly

Abstract

Objects: To investigate the effects of post-core crowns for endodontically treated posterior teeth in the eldely. Methods: 174 posterior teeth in the elderly were endodontically treated and post-core and metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns were luted.The hygiene of crowns and the periodontal health of abutment teeth were studied for 5 consecutive years. Results: 3 crowns and 2 post-core were dislodged. 6 abutment teeth were extracted because of mobility. 13 abutment teeth developed severe periodentitis. 4 abutment teeth suffered root caries. The mobility of another 4 abutment teeth significantly increased.More than 93% of the crowns have good function. Conclusions: Posterior post-core crowns were good for the health and oral function for the elderly .Oral hygiene is very important for the health of abutment teeth.
