Comparison of the nerve regeneration of end-to-side neurorrhaphy and side-to-side neurorrhaphy: an experimental study

Abstract

Objective To compare the nerve regeneration of end-to-side neurorrhaphy with that of end-to-side neurorrhaphy. Methods 22 Wistar rats were randomly divided into A B groups, with 11 rats each. In group A, the left common peroneal nerve was sectioned and its distal end was sutured laterly to the tibial nerve after removal of a window in the epineurium; In group B, the left common stump was sutured in paralell with the tibial nerve after removal of epineurium. 3 months after operation, morphlogy examination, electrophsiological examination and hoseradish peroxidas(Hill?) tracing were used to evaluate the nerve regeneration. Results The number and area of myelinated nerve, nerve conductive velocity and positive marked neurons of dorsal root ganglia made no significant difference between group A and group B(P 0.05). Conclusion The capability of nerve regeneration in end-to-side neurorrhaphy and side-to-side neurorrhaphy is not different.
