Abstract
This paper studies the performance-based design of smoke management system of large-space building, including the choice of style of smoke exhaust system, the determination of exhaust flux or area and the verification of design system. The choice of style and the exhaust flux or area should be made upon the thorough consideration of the construction and function of building, the distribution of combustible, safety goal, the condition of makeup air, ambient and so on.Capacity of design should also be checked with the effect of air makeup and ambient condition on smoke generation.Three ways can be used to verify the performance of a smoke management system: numerical simulation,reduced-scale experiment and local hot smoke test.Local hot smoke test is the best choice if conditions permit, since direct and more convinced results can be obtained from it in comparison with the other two means.
