Effects of Ficus Carica Leaves Extracts on Blood Glucose level and Antioxidative Ability in Diabetic Rats

Objective To study the effects of Ficus carica leaves extracts on blood glucose level and antioxidative ability in type 2 diabetic rats.Methods Type 2 diabetic rat model was induced by feeding with high sugar high fat diet and intraperitoneal injection of low dose STZ.The rats were divided into four groups:the normal control group,the model control group,the high dose Ficus carica leaves extracts group(1 000mg/kg)and the low dose Ficus carica leaves extracts group(500mg/kg).All rats were administered with gavage once a day for four weeks.After 2 weeks treatment,the fasting blood glucose level was monitored;after 4 weeks treatment,the fasting blood glucose level,the activity of SOD,GSHPX in serum and SOD activity,GSH content in liver were studied.Results Ficus carica leaves extracts can not only reduce the fasting blood glucose level of diabetic rats,but also significantly improve the levels of SOD,GSH-PX in serum and SOD,GSH in liver.Conclusion The Ficus carica leaves extracts could reduce the fasting blood glucose and improve the antioxidative ability of the type 2 diabetic rats.The hypoglycemic effect of the Ficus carica leaves extracts may be related to the increase of antioxidative ability in diabetic rats.
