Abstract
Objective To ascertain the effects of zinc supplementation on growth and development status of children in different age groups. Methods A randomized, double-blind, paired zinc supplementation trial was conducted among 4446 children aged 4-12 years.Results Zinc deficiency was common among urban children. Taking zinc supplement was positively associated with growth and development status of children. The effects of zinc supplementation on growth and development were the smallest among 8 year old girls and 10 year old boys.Conclusions The effects of zinc supplementation on growth and development are different in different age groups. Zinc supplementation should accord with physiological need; concerns should be expressed regarding timings and rations.
