Abstract
This paper investigates the layout scheme of flood release works and energy dissipation of high arch dams within deep overburden layers through scale-model tests conducted for a practical large-size high dam as a study case. By the new scheme proposed in this paper, only the slopes need be protected by lining technique, while the protection of scour pool bottom and the secondary dam that are adopted traditionally, are eliminated. The feasibility of this new idea is verified by the results of our model tests, which provides a reference to the design of similar dams in China.
