Abstract

The effects of the composition and content of the intumescent flame retardant(IFR) contained microencapsulated red phosphorus on the flame retarding and mechanical properties of epoxy resin were studied. The test results indicate that good flame retardancy and lower influence on the mechanical properties can be realized when EP treated with 30% IFR and the composition of the IFR is 1.46∶0.34∶3.15(the mass ratio of MRP,pentaerythritol and melamine).Thermogravimetric analysis shows that IFR can increase substantially the charring amount at high temperature.Digital photo and SEM photo of residue indicate that IFR can form densely expanded charring layer around the inner substrate, which can shelter heat and oxygen from outside,so as to improve the flame retardancy of EP.
