Application of New Methods for Indwelling Catheter in Male Patients with Urinary Retention

Objective To explore measures to improve the success rate of catheterization in patients with acute urinary retention.Methods 62 male patients with acute urinary retention whom were not successfully placed a urinary catheter with regular method in our department from January 2011 to December 2011 were analyzed retrospectively.Foleys catheters with built-in ureteral catheter were used to deal with urethral catheterization again after appropriate local anesthesia and well lubricated,and 52 cases were successful;among 10 cases of failed,7 cases were successful in indwelling catheter by half-scabbard urethroscope.Results Except 3 cases were failed to placing a urinary catheter finally and had to operate with suprapubic cystostomy,another 59 patients were succeed in indwelling catheter by the application of new methods without any obvious hematuria or urethral pain.The success rate was 95.16%.Conclusions The clinical application of new methods for indwelling catheter in male patients with urinary retention can help to improve the success rate of catheterization.
