Abstract

The reactive organically-modified α-zirconium phosphate had been synthesized by ion exchange of cations in α-zirconium phosphate with a styryl quaternary ammonium salt, which had been obtained from the reaction of N,N-dimethyl octadecylamine with 4-chloromethyl styrene. Then, the polystyryl-modified α-zirconium phosphate had been prepared from the bulk polymerization of styrene with the reactive organically-modified α-ZrP. The reactive organically-modified α-zirconium phosphate(ZrP-DMA-CMS) and the polystyryl-modified α-zirconium phosphate[P(St-ZrP-DMA-CMS)] had been characterized by infrared spectra(IR),thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA)and X-ray diffraction(XRD). XRD results indicated that the layer d-spacing of ZrP-DMA-CMS had been enlarged from 0.8 nm to 4.0 nm,while the layer d-spacing of P(St-ZrP-DMA-CMS) had been enlarged from 4.0 nm to 4.4 nm. TGA analysis indicated the thermal stability of P(St-ZrP-DMA-CMS)was increased by 17% compared with α-ZrP.
