On the Position of Bao Tang Dialect

Abstract

BaoTang dialect is considered part of JiLu mandarin in the Atlas of Chinese Languages.However,its pronunciation of rusheng is practically the same as Beijing mandarin and completely different from the other dialects of JiLu mandarin.Currently,BaoTang dialect and Beijing mandarin have many phonetic features in common.Historically,they both originated from the ancient YouYan dialect and developed separately due to the cession of 16 YanYun regions to Liao Kingdom in Late Jin Dynasty.Therefore,the paper argues that BaoTang dialect is part of Beijing mandarin.In addition,Beijing mandarin should be classified into three dialects:Beijing dialect,Northeast dialect and BaoTang dialect.
