A Contrast study of Paroxetine and Amitriptyline in the treatment of depression

Abstract

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy and the side effects of paroxetine and Amitriptyline in the treatment of depression.Methods 43 patients with depression were randomly assigned to paroxetine group (n=21) and amitriptyline group (n=22) which were treated day Paroxetine and Amitriptyline respectively for four weeks. Effects and side reactions were eveluated with Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Treatment Emergent Symptoms Scale (TESS) before and after treatment.Results The therapeutic efficacy in paroxetine group was similar to that in amitriptyline ( P 0.05). After treatment, the scores of HAMD decreased greatly ( P 0.01) and no difference appeared in two groups. However the side effects of paroxetine were lighter than that of amitriptyline.Conclusion The results indicate that both paroxetine and amitriptyline are effective on the depression, but paroxetine shows lighter side effects.
