AIDS-related knowledge,attitudes and behavior among female sex workers in Jieyang City,Guangdong Province

Objective To investigate AIDS-related knowledge,attitudes and behavior among female sex workers(FSWs),and to provide scientific basis for effective interventions.Methods Surveillance data of female sex workers in 2008 were collected and parts of the data were analyzed.Results A total of 50 female sex workers were investigated,with the average age of(21.34±3.39)years.Subjects with educational level below junior middle school accounted for 60.0% of the Fsws.The rate of condom use during the last sexual intercourse was 32.0%.The main reason for not using condoms was the fact that clients refused it.Among the female sex workers,22.0% had STD-related symptoms and signs in the past year;36.4% and 27.3%,respectively,went to private clinics for treatment or had medication therapyn by themselves;70.0% of the FSWs could be aware of AIDS knowledge,and 92.0% obtained AIDS knowledge from TV.Conclusion The data show that female sex workers had poor AIDS knowledge and low condom use.The popularization of AIDS knowledge and interventions need to be strengthened in the city.
