Abstract

A series of starch samples with quaternary ammonium and carboxymethyl groups were prepared by varying the feed ratio of N-(3-chloro-2-hydroxyproply) trimethylammonium to starch. The influence of the modification extent on the paste viscosity, adhesion to polyester/cotton fibers, and film behaviors were studied by comparison tests. In order to reduce the dosage of PVA,the effects of the modified starch/PVA blends on the adhesion to polyester/cotton fibers were examined. The experiment results demonstrated that the viscosity of the modified starch increases as the degree of substitution(DS) of cationic groups increases. The modification can improve the adhesion of starch to polyester/cotton fibers, and the adhesion enhances as the DS increases.
