Abstract
Purpose To investigate the signal of the bone marrow of normal lumbar vertebra related to the age and sex. Methods Four hundred and thirty six MRI studies of the normal lumbar vertebra were retrospectively reviewed to assess the variation of the signal.T1 weighted images were mainly evaluated, and the results were correllated with the patients' age and sex statistically. Results The bone marrow patterns were divided into 4 types (9 subtypes).Statistical analysis demonstrated that the variation of bone marrow appearances were related to age,but not to sex. Conclusion The MRI signal of normal lumbar vertebra is influenced by age.Knowledge of the different patterns may serve as a practical aid in the interpretation of MRI examination of the normal and abnormal lumbar vertebra.
