Study the Spirit of the 16th Party Congress in Discussing the Taiwan Issue

The official report of the 16th Party Congress offered a brilliant analysis of the Taiwan issue. It covered not only the effective policies our party has pursued till now, but also some new proposals reflecting changes in the cross - strait situation. These can be summed up as 'Five Adheres and Three New Concepts, and they have clarified our approach and focus in future work regarding Taiwan. Currently, Taiwanese independence forces on Taiwan are exploiting the feelings of Taiwan - born residents and the sense among Taiwan compatriots that their hard times are behind them to guide Taiwan people's sense of themselves towards Taiwanese independence. This presents a grave development for prospects for reunification. The emergence of this mentality among Taiwan's people is inseparable from the impact of China's modern history, especially the past five centuries of Taiwan's history. Only if we understand the mentality of the broad majority of Taiwan compatriots can we conduct our work regarding Taiwan with a clear focus.
