Abstract

In Sui and Tang dynasties and the subsequent five dynasties,physiognomy was very popular and a group of fortunetellers came into being,among which were either professional or amateur.They participated in the existing social life and influenced it by foretelling other people's fortunes.The present investigation of their social positions and social activities provides a new perspective to have a full understanding of the societies of Sui and Tang dynasties and the subsequent five dynasties.
