Abstract

Objective:To explore the clinical significance of serum ferritin levels detection in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods:Serum ferritin was measured in 49 patients with type 2 diabetes and 30 healthy individuals.According to serum ferritinlevel, the patients with type 2 diabetes were divided into normal ferritin group and high serum ferritin group.Fasting blood glucose(FPG),2h plasma glucose(2hPG),glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1C),fasting insulin(FINS),insulin resistance index(HOMA-IR),urinary albumin(UAlb),total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG) of two groups were measured and compared. Results:Serum ferritin level was sig-nificantly elevated in the diabetic group compared with the control group.Higher FPG,2hPG,HbAIC,UAlb,HOMA-IR and FINS were ob-served in the patients with diabetes in high serum ferritin group than in low serum ferritin group.there was no significant difference in TCand TG detection. Conclusion:Iron reserves are increased in the patients with type 2 diabetes.Serum iron detection has important clini-cal value in the prognosis of disease condition and early renal damage in diabetes patients.
